Sekar is a dancer, choreographer, and multidisciplinary artist from Solo. She has studied traditional dance since childhood, joining a studio and continuing her studies at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. Her work reflects Javanese traditional philosophy as its artistic axis.
Sekar has participated in various residencies and national and international performances. Among them are the UCLG (United City Local Government) Global Youth Culture Forum in Jeju (South Korea, 2018), the ‘Sea of Silence’ tour with Tamara Cubas at Teatro Solis (Uruguay, 2024), Tanz Im August (Germany, 2024), Festival d’Avignon (France, 2024), Teatro a Mil (Chile, 2025), Festival Adelante (Germany, 2025), Rimbun Dahan Residencies (Malaysia, 2025) and is currently developing the Sinekar Movement Laboratory since 2023.
Currently, Sekar is interested in global issues related to women, the environment, and technological developments. In the future, she will explore cross-disciplinary collaborations and focus on the artistic vision she has developed through the philosophy of Javanese tradition. She has been working with performance artist and lecturer Melati Suryodarmo at Studio Plesungan since 2020. Sekar is interested in participatory forms of work related to the history of spectatorship in Indonesia, which predominantly involve the audience as part of the artistic event.
